JDAM Extended Range (ER) Wing Kits
Ferra was awarded a sole source contract to develop and manufacture the Joint Direct Attack Munition Extended Range (JDAM ER) wing kits for the 500lb JDAM Smart bomb alongside Boeing and Defence Material Organisation (DMO). The original design was developed by the Australian Department of Defence (DoD) and is based on the Kerkanya concept. The objectives of JDAM ER program are to extend the range of the weapon to more than 3 times existing capability and to also give accuracy of 3 – 7 metres over that extended distance.
Upon commencement of the program, Ferra had to work very closely with Boeing to transform a basic design / concept that was generated by DoD and convert it into a repeatable and producible aerospace product that would meet flight test requirements. This process entailed risk sharing, full transparency and flexibility. It delivered a very successful outcome which concluded with successful flight testing and qualification in 2014.
The sub system itself is made up of over 150 detail parts and includes managing a supply chain of over 30 local and international suppliers. Components that are integrated as part of the final assembly at Ferra include:
- Machined components and sub-assemblies
- Fabricated and sheet metal components
- Wire harnesses and assemblies
- Metallic springs
- Standard hardware items
- Explosives and pyrotechnics
As part of final integration a full acceptance test plan is followed and includes electronic, functional and static testing. It is expected that over 10,000 of these kits will be sold globally to a number of international customers.
